Splitting Sudan
The country of Sudan has been at war with itself for much of its history. A U.S.-backed peace deal in 2005 put an end to civil war, and also guaranteed South Sudan a vote for self-determination. But the potential for renewed conflict looms.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Sudan has been at war with itself for decades. Arab Muslims in the north have long dominated Christian and animist Africans in the south. But, in a referendum scheduled for January 2011, southerners are expected to vote for separation. And the divorce may not be pretty. The south will take water, land, and about three quarters of Sudan’s oil with it. That’s one of many reasons the north opposes the divorce, and why there’s fear of a return to conflict.

Sean Carberry reports from Malakal in South Sudan on the voter registration process, and how people there are eager for the referendum but wary of possible conflict with the north.

In the months leading up to South Sudan's January 9th referendum, local governments across the South led public rallies meant to educate South Sudanese about the process. But the line between education and outright advocacy for separation is often blurry in South Sudan.

Residents of Bor, the capital of Jonglei state, flocked to Independence Square on the eve of registration. The event was organized by the non-partisan referendum committee. There were performances by the a local Christian youth group calling for independence from the largely Muslim North.
